ChinatownLittle India - Hindu TempleMerlion ParkSingapore River
Available on:
1 Dec 2009, Tuesday Duration: 3 hours,
2.00 pm to 6.00 pm
Note: Minimum 6 / Maximum 20 persons per time slot

Chinatown, Little India and the Singapore River are testimony to Singapore’s rich ethnic, cultural and historical heritage.  They provide an insight into the cultural fabric of Singapore and are perhaps the country’s truest attractions of all time.

Singapore’s Chinatown - Experience the diversity and colours as you browse around the enclave and delight in the possibility of picking up some quaint curios at very attractive prices. Located in three newly restored shophouses, the Chinatown Heritage Centre houses a wealth of memories and untold stories of the past. Each level of the Centre takes you to a different time in the history of Chinatown and allows you to trace the lives of our early settlers. Learn about the rich cultural history of old Chinatown and experience life in a typical Chinatown shophouse.

Little India   - The first Indian settlers in Singapore arrived with Sir Stamford Raffles as assistants and soldiers back in the 1800’s.  They were later joined by immigrants who came as labourers and civil servants. Today, Little India is the focal point of the Indian community. Find yourself being beckoned by the spice-scented streets as you stroll around the enclave where your senses will be assailed by a cacophony of colours, sounds and scents. Walk along the five-foot ways of shophouses and discover an array of Indian silk, brassware and carvings. Visit a spice shop or look out for the itinerant yoghurt-sellers and spice grinders. And if you are very adventurous, try the mildly narcotic betel nuts, believed to be good for the digestive system.

Singapore River - Take a ride down the Singapore River on a bumboat as you revel in its history.

The Singapore River was the lifeline of Singapore where our first immigrants eked out a meagre living and saw Singapore transform from an obscure little fishing village to a great seaport.  Travel through time on the bumboat and revel in the island’s history. Highlights of this trip will feature Boat Quay and Clarke Quay, landmarks of Singapore such as Merlion Park and Parliament House and the skyline of Singapore’s business district.

8.30 am to 12.00 Noon
Note: Minimum 6 / Maximum 20 persons per time slot

Experience Life in Kampong Glam – the cultural hub for early Arabs in Singapore, the main street (Arab Street) is flanked by small shops selling carpets, textiles, crafts and rattan baskets – age old trades which sustained early immigrants. Along with newly developed Bussorah Mall, colorful skirts, scarves and houseware from the shophouse windows attract passers-by.

The Malay Heritage Museum showcases the history of Malays in the region, Singapore’s own Malay heritage, social and economic development, as well as their contribution and aspiration toward nation building. The intricate artifacts, dioramas, murals and multimedia in all the 8 galleries promised an insightful experience of the stories of Singapore Malays from the past into post-independence era.

Batik Appreciation
Batik is a form of fabric art associated closely with the Malay people. Yet, many are not aware that batik has a very universal appeal and is an established art form in China, Japan and India. The Malays have used batik in their own unique ways. Different types of batik have their individual stories and purpose. In Indonesia, the Batik Larangan (Forbidden Batik) is still the exclusive domain of the Javanese royal house.

Participants of the Centre’s batik programme will be brought into this complex and intriguing world of batik. 15 exclusive hand-painted batik designs, including the batik larangan will be on display and used as reference materials.

Guests will have a piece of their own hand-made batik as a souvenir.

Singapore Botanical Gardens was where the first rubber trees were cultivated from seedlings set from Kew Gardens in London. The Gardens epitomizes the tropical island’s luxuriant parks. Spread over 52 hectares and close to the centre of the city, the garden is a combination of untouched primary forest and specialty gardens displaying frangipanis, roses, ferns and desert plants, to name a few. The thousands of plant species here, including many rare specimens reflect the garden’s richness and diversity of plant life. You will also see some masterpieces by sculptor Sydney Harpley.

The present orchid enclosure has 20,000 orchid plants on display. The National Orchid Garden promises sprawling orchid displays, water features and exotic bromeliad collection from Central and South America.

Expect an afternoon of pleasantries, strolling through the gardens with a School of Horticulture guide or an Orchidologist who will be on hand to explain the diversity and history of the garden and the many facts of orchid-growing and point out the special orchid hybrids named after VIPs. Of special interest is the Vanda Miss Joaquim – the first orchid hybrid discovered on the island and now the national flower of Singapore.

The new Cool House situated in the National Orchid Garden is the first conservatory in Asia to simulate a tropical montane forest. The use of realistic landscapes, rushing torrents, drifting mist, plants and climate control offer a naturalistic display of high elevation sites in the tropics. Trees and rocks are draped with orchids and carnivorous plants from the cooler tropical highlands. Enhance your tour with a relaxing afternoon tea at The Halia, whilst still enjoying a view of the Garden through its full glass windows.
